Special Issue on “Climate Change and the Economy”
September, 2023 (hybrid event) Workshop in Shanghai, China

There is a complex and multifaceted relationship between climate change and the economy. Changes in climate conditions such like warmer temperatures, sea level rise and extreme weather will disrupt the economy by impacting human health and productivity, causing losses in agriculture, as well as bringing disruption in trade and supply chains. On the contrary, the economy can significantly impact on the climate in energy consumption, land use changes, waste generation and globalization. In addition to adapting to climate change, many economic policies and regulations are implemented to mitigate climate change.

We are inviting papers for a special issue that aims to explore the intricate relationship between climate change and the economy. The following topics are of particular interest:

1. Climate change and well-being;
2. Distributional impacts of climate change, adaptation and mitigation within and across countries or regions;
3. Carbon emission and Carbon sequestration from economic activities;
4. Trade and climate change;
5. Synergy between abatement of other environmental issue and climate change;
6. Behavioral, practice, and policy changes to address climate change.

To address these and related questions and issues, the captioned workshop,partly financed by the Humanity and Social Science Interdisciplinary Innovative Youth Group Fund of Fundamental Research Funds for the Central Universities of East China Normal University (2021QKT002) and the Ministry of Education Project of Key Research Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences at Universities in China (22JJD790014) will be organized by the Institute of World Economy at Fudan University, East China Normal University and Journal of Economic Survey (JoES).

The workshop committee invites both theoretical and applied research papers, focusing on the relationship between climate change and the economy. Some 10-15 papers will be selected for presentations at the workshop. A sub-set of the workshop papers will be invited for revision, and then publication consideration in the JoES special issue after going through the usual double-blind review process. Papers invited for publication consideration in the JoES special issue should have a strong literature review component. Submissions must be in English with good data and solid methodology plus evidence-based policy recommendations or implications. Please send your full paper to fudansjs@163.com by August 31, 2023 (late submissions will not be considered). Corresponding authors of selected papers can expect an acceptance email by early-September 2023. Unselected papers  will not be notified.
