Institute of
World Economy, Fudan University is one of the Education Ministry’s key
bases for the research of liberal arts and social sciences. Consisting
of two project teams and maintaining a specialized website, it mainly
focuses on the following areas: individual economies; regional
economies; effects of institutions on economies; comprehensive
research of current world economic issues, including structural and
institutional changes of world economy, investment, finance, and the
effects of global trade, and division of labor.
Based
on its research achievements and academic advantage in the above
areas, the institute undertakes consultancy work in addition to
teaching, providing policy research reports for government agencies
and advising enterprises on international competition and finance.
Among its researchers, 12 are
full-time including 7 professors and 13 are part-time (6 of which are
professors). Prof. Min HUA is Director of the institute and Professors
Binran DAI, Xingdi GAN, and Xiangshuo YIN are Deputy Directors.
The institute becomes what it is
after undergoing a restructuring process according to its research
areas and the Education Ministry’s design plan for liberal arts and
social sciences. Originally set up in 1964, it initially specialized
in comprehensive research of advanced countries’ political and
economic conditions. Via a series of books on North American and
Western European countries, it became the pioneer in those areas in
China. It never suspended its research, not even during the Cultural
Revolution when the entire academic community was under attack.
World
economy research is an organic whole consisting of both horizontal and
vertical elements. Horizontal regional studies are also essential in
addition to comprehensive world economy issues such as multinational
companies, international finance and trade. Therefore, in the 90s,
with the university’s support and approval, the institute set up
successively the Center for Japanese Studies and Center for European
Studies, adding new research areas and resulting in a more open
organization. During the recent 3 years, the full-time researchers of
the institute have produced 16 books, 75 papers, and 8 government or
enterprise consultancy reports that have been adopted by the
commissioning parties. The per capita figures for books and papers are
1.3 and 6.25 respectively. Meanwhile, the part-time researchers have
produced 16 books and 42 papers, and 5 government consultancy reports
that have all been adopted. The per capita figures are 1.3 books and
3.23 papers respectively. These research results have generated
significant social and economic benefits, which is partly reflected in
the 16 prizes obtained during the same period, including 7 second
prizes, 6 third prizes, all above the provincial and ministerial
levels. After the restructuring the institute will further combine
strengths and funds from inside and outside the university and China
to emphasize significant theoretical and practical issues in world
economy.
As an open organization, the institute
welcomes scholars from home and abroad to visit it for various
academic activities. It aims to become via 5-8 years’ efforts a
nationally leading research base with a significant international
presence, a base that excels at training for academics, academic and
information exchanges, policy studies and consultancy services for
relevant government agencies and other organization.
